Wardrobes take 18 to 25% of a typical Pune interior budget — often more than the kitchen once you count every bedroom. They are also the item most often quoted as a lump sum, which is exactly how a quotation becomes impossible to compare.
Insist on running feet
"Bedroom 1 furniture — ₹2,10,000" tells you nothing. What you want is: 9 ft wardrobe + 3 ft loft + 4 ft study, at a stated rate per running foot, with the carcass grade and shutter finish named.
Priced that way you can compare three quotations honestly, and you can cut scope intelligently if the total is high — dropping two feet of wardrobe is a decision you can actually make.
Sliding or hinged
Hinged gives you the full depth of every compartment, costs less per running foot, allows internal fittings on the shutter, and lets you see the whole wardrobe at once. It needs about 600 mm of swing clearance in front.
Sliding recovers that swing space entirely, which in a narrow Pune bedroom is often the difference between a walkable room and a squeeze. The trade-offs: you only ever access half the wardrobe at a time, the track needs cleaning, and good sliding hardware costs meaningfully more than good hinges. Cheap sliding hardware is the single most common source of wardrobe complaints.
Practical rule: if there is less than 750 mm between the wardrobe face and the bed, go sliding and spend properly on the track.
Carcass and shutter
Use 710-grade BWP ply where the wardrobe sits against an external wall, a north-facing wall, or on a ground floor — that is where Pune's monsoon humidity does its damage. HDHMR is acceptable in a dry internal position and is the flatter substrate for gloss, acrylic and PU shutters.
In a recently handed-over tower, add a moisture barrier and a ventilation gap behind the carcass. A wardrobe fixed flush to a freshly plastered external wall is the most common second-monsoon failure in new Pune and PCMC buildings.
Shutters: laminate for value and durability, membrane or MDF for profiled and fluted looks, acrylic for gloss, veneer or PU at the premium end. Matte and textured surfaces hide handprints far better than gloss.
Internals that actually earn their space
- Hanging in two heights. Long hanging for kurtas, sarees and coats; double-height short hanging for shirts and trousers, which nearly doubles capacity in that section.
- Drawers, not shelves, at waist height. Shelves below eye level become a pile. Two or three soft-close drawers change how the wardrobe is used daily.
- A dedicated saree or heavy-garment section where relevant, with the depth and hanging length it actually needs.
- A pull-out mirror or a shutter-mounted one, rather than a wall mirror that consumes another wall.
- Loft above, with a hinged or lift-up shutter — for luggage, bedding and seasonal items. It is the cheapest storage in the house per cubic foot.
- Internal lighting on a door sensor, which costs little and transforms a deep wardrobe.
- Ventilation. Small vents or a gap at the back on external walls prevent the musty smell that develops through a Pune monsoon.
Hardware
Hinges, channels, sliding tracks and lift-ups are what fail and what you handle every day. Ask for brand and series rather than the word "soft-close" — we specify from partners such as Häfele, Hettich and Ebco and name the series on the quotation line, which is what makes the estimate checkable on site.
Wardrobe cost in Pune, 2026
Rates per running foot, for a standard 7 ft height, carcass and shutter:
- Essential — BWP or HDHMR carcass, laminate shutters, standard hardware, hinged: ₹1,300 to ₹1,900 per running foot.
- Mid-segment — full BWP, better laminate or membrane, branded soft-close, good internals: ₹2,000 to ₹3,000.
- Sliding, add roughly ₹500 to ₹1,200 per running foot depending on the track system.
- Premium — acrylic, PU or veneer with premium hardware and full internals: ₹3,200 to ₹5,500.
- Loft, typically ₹700 to ₹1,300 per running foot — and often quoted separately, so check.
A typical 10 ft master bedroom wardrobe with loft therefore runs ₹2 L to ₹3 L at mid-segment, and a full three-bedroom set ₹4.5 L to ₹7 L.
Three things to check on the quotation
- Is the loft included or priced separately?
- Are internals included — drawers, pull-outs, mirror, lighting — or is the rate for an empty box with a rod and shelves?
- What is the carcass grade, by brand? "Premium ply" is not a specification.
