The single most expensive mistake in a Pune interior is not a design choice. It is a board choice you cannot see once the laminate is on. Pune gets a long, wet monsoon and a genuinely humid July and August, and every material behaves differently in it.
Here is what each board actually is, and where it belongs.
BWP plywood, often sold as marine ply
What it is: hardwood veneers bonded with a phenol formaldehyde resin, graded boiling water proof. Look for the IS 710 marking.
Strengths: the best moisture performance of the common options, excellent screw-holding, and it takes the weight of a loaded wardrobe or a long kitchen run without sagging.
Weaknesses: the most expensive, and quality varies widely between manufacturers. Surface is uneven, so it needs laminate or veneer over it.
Use it for: kitchen base units, everything under a sink, bathroom vanities, utility-area storage, wardrobe carcasses in ground-floor or north-facing rooms, and anything carrying load.
HDHMR
What it is: high density high moisture resistant board — wood fibre pressed at high density, engineered to be flatter and more uniform than ply.
Strengths: perfectly flat surface, so it is the better substrate for high-gloss, acrylic, PU and membrane shutters where any waviness shows. Consistent from sheet to sheet, no core gaps, and usually cheaper than good BWP ply.
Weaknesses: moisture resistant, not moisture proof. Standing water at a cut edge will still swell it. Screw-holding is lower than ply, so hinge and channel fixing must be done properly, ideally with the right inserts.
Use it for: shutters and panels, especially in gloss or PU finishes; TV units, wall panelling, wardrobe shutters, and dry-area furniture.
MDF
What it is: medium density fibreboard. Smooth, easy to machine, ideal for routed and moulded profiles.
Strengths: excellent for detailed shutter profiles, fluting and lacquered finishes. Inexpensive.
Weaknesses: poor moisture tolerance in the standard grade and weak screw retention. It should not be anywhere near a wet zone.
Use it for: decorative panelling, profile shutters, and interior components in dry rooms.
Particle board
What it is: wood chips bonded under pressure. The cheapest option, and the one most often substituted quietly.
Where it belongs in Pune: honestly, only in low-cost rental furnishing and in components that carry no load and meet no moisture. It swells irreversibly, and once it does the piece is finished.
The practical Pune specification
For most homes across Baner, Wakad, Kharadi, Ravet or Bavdhan, this is a sound and cost-sensible combination:
- Kitchen base units and sink cabinet: 710-grade BWP ply carcass, always.
- Kitchen shutters: HDHMR for gloss, acrylic or PU; laminate over BWP ply is also fine.
- Kitchen wall units and tall units: BWP ply or HDHMR.
- Wardrobe carcass: BWP ply where the wall is external, north-facing or ground-floor; HDHMR is acceptable in a dry internal room.
- Wardrobe shutters and panelling: HDHMR or MDF depending on finish.
- Bathroom vanity: BWP ply at minimum, or a WPC or stainless carcass in a heavily used bathroom.
- Utility and balcony storage: BWP ply or WPC. This is where Pune's rain reaches.
Edge sealing matters as much as the board
Most swelling starts at an unsealed cut edge, not across the face. Insist on proper edge banding on every exposed and hidden edge, and sealing at every cut-out — sink, hob, plumbing, hinge boring. A ₹4,000 board can be ruined by a ₹40 edge that was skipped.
How to check what you were actually supplied
- Ask for the board to be shown to you before it is cut. Genuine BWP ply carries the grade marking and brand printed along the edge.
- Look at the core. Good ply shows even layers with no gaps or overlaps.
- Keep a cut-off. Ask the site team to leave one offcut of each board with you. If a dispute arises later, you have the evidence.
- Match the invoice. Material invoices should name the brand and grade in your quotation.
Two more things Pune homes need
Anti-termite treatment — worth doing at the carcass stage, particularly in older buildings in Kothrud, Pashan and central Pune.
A gap at the bottom. Furniture sitting flush on the floor wicks up water from every mop. A small skirting gap or adjustable legs extends the life of a kitchen by years.
