Every Pune homeowner eventually reaches the same point: the walls look tired, the monsoon has left a few patches near the windows, and it is time to call painters. The difficulty is that almost every painting contractor in Pune quotes a similar per sq ft rate, promises a premium brand and says the job will take a week. The differences only show up after the furniture goes back in place.
At Gruham Buildsol we handle painting as part of interior and renovation projects across Pune and PCMC, so we see both sides: the jobs we plan from scratch and the repaints we are called in to correct. This guide sets out what actually separates a reliable painting team from an average one.
1. Ask how they will prepare the surface
Paint is only as good as the wall underneath it. Most failures we see in Pune homes, such as bubbling, flaking, patchy sheen and early fading, come from skipped preparation, not from a cheap paint.
- Moisture check: a good contractor checks damp patches, ideally with a moisture meter, before quoting. Painting over a damp wall simply hides the problem for one season. We cover this in detail in Damp Walls and Seepage: Fix These Before Painting.
- Crack and putty work: hairline cracks should be opened, filled and sanded, not just covered with an extra coat.
- Sanding and primer: ask whether the quote includes sanding and one coat of primer. If it is not written, assume it is not included.
2. Get a written scope, not a single per sq ft number
A quote that says only "interior painting, ₹X per sq ft" is impossible to compare. Ask for a scope that lists:
- Rooms and surfaces covered (walls, ceilings, doors, grills, balcony).
- Number of putty coats, primer coats and finish coats.
- The exact paint product and sheen for each area, not just the brand name.
- How area is measured, whether by carpet area, wall area or a multiplier.
- What is excluded: furniture shifting, minor civil repair, waterproofing.
Our interior wall painting cost guide for Pune explains how to read these numbers side by side.
3. Check who will supervise the site
In many painting jobs the person who gives the quote never returns to the site. Ask who will check the work daily, who signs off each room, and who you call if a shade does not match the sample. Supervision matters even more when you are living in the flat while it is painted.
4. Ask about protection and cleanliness
Professional teams mask floors, switchboards, windows, wardrobes and kitchen counters before starting, and clean up properly at the end. Mechanised sanding with dust extraction, as used in services like Berger Express Painting, reduces the dust that usually settles into wardrobes and AC units.
5. Understand the brand and product you are paying for
Brand names alone do not tell you much. Berger, Asian Paints and other major brands each sell economy, mid-range and luxury lines. A contractor quoting "Berger" might mean an economy distemper or a premium washable emulsion. Our guide to choosing Berger paints for Pune homes breaks down where each category fits.
6. Look at completed work, not only photographs
Ask to see a flat painted at least a year ago. Look at corners, ceiling edges, the line where wall meets skirting, and the area around switchboards. Clean cutting lines and even sheen tell you more than a portfolio.
7. Ask what happens after handover
Good painting contractors in Pune will return for touch-ups after the furniture is placed back, because scuffs during shifting are almost guaranteed. Ask whether this visit is included and whether any warranty applies. Our article on what a good warranty should cover applies to painting too.
Red flags to watch for
- A quote given over the phone without seeing the walls.
- Pressure to pay most of the amount upfront.
- Refusal to name the exact product or show sealed paint containers on site.
- No mention of putty, primer or damp treatment.
When painting should be part of a larger plan
If you are also changing wardrobes, a kitchen or electrical points, paint last. Repainting first and then drilling for new furniture wastes money. In those cases it is usually better to plan the whole job together, which is how we approach home renovation in Pune.
