Exterior Wall Painting in Pune: Planning Around the Monsoon

The exterior of a Pune home faces two very different enemies. From June to September, driving rain soaks plaster, opens hairline cracks and feeds algae on north-facing walls. From March to May, strong sun fades colour and dries out paint films. An exterior paint job that ignores either season will look tired within two years.

This guide covers exterior wall painting for independent bungalows, row houses and small buildings in Pune. If you are on a housing society committee planning a full building repaint, also read our society building repainting guide.

When to paint exteriors in Pune

The best window is usually October to February, once walls have dried out after the monsoon. Plaster holds moisture for several weeks after the last heavy rain, so starting in early October is fine for most walls, but a moisture check is still essential. March to May is workable, though afternoon heat can make paint dry too fast on west-facing walls, so teams should work those faces in the morning.

Avoid starting exterior work in late May. A pre-monsoon shower on a freshly primed wall can undo days of preparation.

Inspect before you choose a colour

  • Cracks: hairline plaster cracks should be opened and filled with a crack-filling compound. Structural cracks need an engineer's opinion first. Our article on when you need a structural consultant explains the warning signs.

  • Algae and fungus: black and green patches must be cleaned and treated with a fungicidal wash, otherwise they grow back through the new paint.

  • Seepage paths: check terrace parapets, window sills and plumbing lines. Interior damp often starts outside. See damp walls and seepage.

  • Chalking: rub the old paint with your palm. If it leaves a powder, the surface needs proper washing and a suitable primer.

The exterior painting system

  1. Pressure washing to remove dust, algae and loose paint.

  2. Repairs to cracks, chipped plaster and sill edges.

  3. Waterproof or exterior primer suited to the substrate.

  4. Two coats of exterior emulsion, preferably a product with water-repellent and anti-algal properties for Pune's monsoon.

Major brands offer tiers here. Berger's WeatherCoat range, for example, includes long-life and anti-dust exterior emulsions, and other manufacturers have similar lines. Our guide to Berger paints for Pune homes explains how to match the tier to the wall.

Exterior painting cost in Pune

As an indicative 2026 range, exterior repainting in Pune typically runs about ₹30 to ₹55 per sq ft including preparation and two finish coats, with waterproof coatings and scaffolding adding to that. Heavily damaged walls, tall elevations and specialist elastomeric coatings cost more. For interior figures, see our interior wall painting cost guide.

Choosing exterior colours that last

Very dark and saturated colours fade fastest under Pune's summer sun and show heat stress. Mid-tone earthy shades such as sand, clay, warm greys and muted olives age well and hide dust from nearby construction. Use a darker shade for plinths and lower walls where splash-back from rain is common. For a full colour approach, see colour palettes that work in Pune homes.

Safety and supervision

Exterior work at height needs proper scaffolding or rope access, harnesses and a supervisor on site. Ask your contractor how they will protect windows, AC units, plants and parked vehicles. A good team will also photograph each elevation before and after.

Combine exterior work with other renovation

If you plan to replace windows, add a grill, or change balcony flooring, do these before the exterior paint. The same applies to a full home renovation: exterior paint should be one of the last jobs.
