Damp Walls and Seepage: Fix These Before Painting Your Pune Home

Every October, Pune homeowners notice the same thing: a patch near the window that bubbled during the rains, white powder at the bottom of a bedroom wall, or paint peeling beside the bathroom. The natural reaction is to call a painter. But if the moisture is still there, a fresh coat will fail again by the next monsoon.

Recognise the signs

  • Bubbles or blisters in the paint film.

  • Efflorescence: white, salty powder on the surface.

  • Flaking paint and crumbling putty.

  • Dark patches, mould or a musty smell, often behind wardrobes.

  • Tide marks at the base of walls.

Find the source

Damp in Pune apartments usually comes from one of five sources:

  1. Bathroom leakage into an adjoining wall, from failed waterproofing, tile joints or concealed pipes.

  2. External wall seepage through cracked plaster, especially on walls facing the south-west monsoon.

  3. Window frame gaps where sealant has failed.

  4. Terrace or upper-floor leaks in top-floor and duplex homes.

  5. Condensation in poorly ventilated rooms and behind furniture placed tight to cold walls.

The location of the patch is the biggest clue. A patch shared with a bathroom wall points to plumbing or waterproofing. A patch under a window points to the frame or sill. A patch on a top-floor ceiling points to the terrace.

Measure, do not guess

A moisture meter reading tells you whether the wall is wet and how far the damp has spread. Good painting teams take readings before quoting; this is also standard in mechanised painting services. Walls usually need several dry weeks after the monsoon before they read safe to paint.

Fix the cause first

  • Bathroom leaks: regrout or replace tiles, repair joints, and redo waterproofing if needed. Covered in our room-by-room renovation guide.

  • External seepage: repair cracks and apply an exterior waterproof coating, then repaint. See exterior painting in Pune.

  • Windows: reseal frames and correct sill slopes.

  • Condensation: improve ventilation and leave a gap behind wardrobes.

In a housing society, external walls and terraces are usually common areas, so the repair may need the committee. Our society repainting guide explains how to approach it.

Then repair the wall

  1. Scrape off all loose paint and damaged putty.

  2. Let the wall dry fully and recheck moisture.

  3. Apply a damp-resistant primer or interior waterproofing coat as specified.

  4. Re-putty, sand and prime.

  5. Finish with a suitable emulsion; anti-fungal variants help in bathrooms and north walls.

Protect your interiors too

Damp walls damage wardrobes, kitchen units and wooden flooring. If you are planning interiors, read monsoon-proof interiors and marine ply vs HDHMR.

What it costs

Damp repair is usually quoted as a lump sum after inspection because the cause varies. Painting costs afterwards follow the ranges in our painting cost guide.

Gruham Buildsol inspects damp walls, traces the source, fixes it and then repaints, so the problem does not return next monsoon. Book an inspection.
