Colour Palettes That Work in Pune Homes, Room by Room

Colour advice written for European or American homes often fails in Pune. Our light is stronger, the monsoon brings months of grey skies, dust is a constant, and most apartments come with beige or grey vitrified tiles and brown or white laminate furniture. These palettes are designed for those conditions.

Treat them as starting points. Always test shortlisted shades on your own walls, as explained in colour consultation before you paint.

Palette 1: Warm Neutral (most versatile)

  • Base: warm off-white or soft ivory.

  • Support: greige or light sand.

  • Accent: terracotta or burnt clay.

Works with beige floors and wooden furniture. A safe choice for living rooms in Baner, Aundh and Kothrud homes with warm afternoon light.

Palette 2: Calm Green

  • Base: soft white with a hint of grey.

  • Support: sage or muted eucalyptus.

  • Accent: deep olive.

Brings the outdoors in, especially for flats facing hills in Bavdhan, Sus or Pashan. Lovely in bedrooms and study corners.

Palette 3: Cool Modern

  • Base: clean neutral white.

  • Support: light warm grey.

  • Accent: charcoal or ink blue.

Suits grey floors and white or handleless modular furniture common in newer towers in Hinjewadi, Kharadi and Wakad. Keep greys warm-leaning so rooms do not feel cold during the monsoon.

Palette 4: Indian Contemporary

  • Base: warm cream.

  • Support: soft ochre or mustard-beige.

  • Accent: deep teal or peacock.

Pairs well with brass, cane, wooden jaalis and traditional textiles.

Room-by-room guidance

  1. Living room: base neutral on most walls, accent behind TV or sofa. Consider a texture accent wall.

  2. Master bedroom: soft, slightly deeper supporting tone, darker headboard wall.

  3. Kids' room: calm base with colour brought in through one wall, furniture or decor rather than every wall.

  4. Kitchen: light, washable shades; let the shutters provide colour.

  5. Passages and foyers: slightly deeper than the living base to hide marks, or a two-tone wall.

  6. Ceilings: white or a very pale tint of the wall colour.

  7. Pooja area: warm whites, soft gold or saffron accents.

Exterior palettes

For exteriors, mid-tone earthy shades such as sand, clay, stone grey and muted olive age best under Pune's sun and dust. Avoid very dark or saturated colours on large west-facing walls. See exterior painting in Pune.

Vastu considerations

If you follow Vastu, direction-based colour suggestions can be blended into these palettes. See Vastu tips for apartments.

Product and finish

Use washable emulsions in high-traffic rooms and matt or soft-sheen finishes elsewhere. Our Berger paints guide explains tiers. For trend direction, see interior design trends in Pune for 2026.
