If your Pune flat feels plain but a full interior project is not on the cards, an accent wall is one of the most cost-effective upgrades available. Done well, it gives a room a focal point, adds depth and makes standard builder walls feel considered. Done badly, it looks dated within two years. Here is how to get it right.
Where an accent wall works best
- Behind the TV unit in the living room, where the eye naturally rests.
- Behind the bed headboard, ideal for calm, deeper tones.
- The dining wall, especially in open living-dining layouts, to zone the space.
- The entrance or foyer wall, which sets the tone of the home.
- A pooja niche, framed with a soft texture. See pooja room designs for Pune apartments.
Avoid accent walls on the wall with the window. Backlit by daylight, they look dark and flat.
Finishes that work in Pune homes
- Deep solid colour. The simplest accent: a rich shade in a premium emulsion. Low risk, easy to change later.
- Limewash and mineral effects. Soft, cloudy movement that suits modern and Indian contemporary interiors.
- Fine sand or stucco textures. Subtle depth, good for living rooms and bedrooms.
- Metallic and pearl effects. Use sparingly, ideally on a small wall or niche.
- Stencils and geometric patterns. Good in kids' rooms; keep them simple elsewhere.
- Two-tone walls. A darker lower half and lighter upper half, separated by a clean line, hides scuffs in passages.
Major paint brands, including Berger, offer designer and texture finish ranges. The applicator's skill matters as much as the product, so ask to see a sample board before committing.
Light makes or breaks texture
Texture shows best under grazing light: a wall washer, a cove light from the false ceiling or a pair of wall lights. Under flat ceiling light, texture can look like a defect. Plan lighting with the wall, not after.
Colour choices
Earthy terracotta, olive, deep teal, charcoal and warm taupe all work well against the beige and grey floors common in Pune apartments. For whole-home combinations, see colour palettes for Pune homes, and use the method in colour consultation before you paint.
Practical cautions
- Texture is hard to remove. Choose something you will like for five years or more.
- Heavy textures trap dust; avoid them near kitchens and on highway-facing walls.
- Do not texture a damp wall. Fix moisture first; see damp walls and seepage.
- In rentals, stick to solid accent colours that are easy to repaint. See designing a rental flat.
Cost
Texture and designer finishes typically cost several times a standard emulsion per sq ft, but because the area is small, an accent wall is usually a modest line item. Our painting cost guide has indicative ranges.
Make it part of the design
An accent wall works best when it relates to furniture, flooring and lighting. That is where an interior designer adds value; read how paint shapes interior design.
