The Painting Stage in Pune Construction: Putty, Primer and Finish Done Right

Whether you are building a bungalow on your own plot or taking possession of a new flat, the painting stage is the last major construction activity and the one everyone sees. In Pune's construction market, it is also the stage most often rushed to meet handover dates. Here is what doing it right looks like.

Before painting: curing and drying

Fresh cement plaster holds a lot of moisture. Painting too early traps it, leading to efflorescence, patchiness and peeling within months. New plaster typically needs several weeks to cure and dry, longer during or just after the monsoon. A moisture meter reading should confirm the wall is ready.

The correct sequence

  1. Services complete: all electrical conduits, switch boxes, plumbing and AC lines in place and tested.

  2. Surface check: plaster level, corners straight, cracks addressed.

  3. Alkali-resistant primer on fresh plaster where specified.

  4. Wall putty: typically two coats, each sanded smooth.

  5. Interior primer over putty.

  6. First finish coat.

  7. Carpentry and fixtures, if interiors are being done.

  8. Final finish coat and touch-ups after all other trades leave.

Keeping the last coat until after carpentry avoids repainting walls damaged during installation.

Exterior painting in new construction

Exterior walls should be treated for cracks at plaster joints, primed with an exterior primer and finished with two coats of a weather-resistant emulsion. Time the work for the dry season. See exterior painting in Pune and our Berger paints guide for system choices.

Waterproofing comes first

Bathrooms, terraces, balconies and external walls exposed to the south-west monsoon need waterproofing before finishes. Paint cannot compensate for missing waterproofing. See damp walls and seepage.

Possession checks for new flats

If you are buying in a new Pune project, inspect the builder's paint finish before possession:

  • Uneven patches and roller marks under side light.

  • Hairline cracks at beam and column junctions.

  • Damp marks near bathrooms and windows.

  • Paint splashes on tiles, windows and fittings.

Record these in a snag list; our guide on recording an actionable snag list shows how. Also read what to finalise before possession.

Repaint after interiors?

Many owners of new flats do interiors first and then repaint in their chosen palette. That is the right order. Plan colours with your designer; see how paint shapes interior design.

Structural cracks

Not every crack is cosmetic. Diagonal cracks, cracks wider than a hairline or cracks that keep growing need an engineer's assessment. Gruham Buildsol's structural team can help; see when a structural consultant is needed.
